Hundreds of walkers take part in an autmnal Glasgow Life Walk
350 walkers of all ages took part in a sponsored walk around Glasgow on Saturday to raise funds for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre at the Western Infirmary.
This was the fourth outing for Maggie’s Glasgow Life Walk, which is hoped to raise approximately £40,000 to fund Maggie’s essential programme of emotional and practical support for people with cancer and their friends and family.
Glasgow Life Walk took in a special new route this year around Glasgow’s leafy west-end, taking in the Kelvin Walkway, Botanical Gardens, Victoria Park, Maggie’s Glasgow, as well as the site for Maggie’s second Centre in Glasgow at Gartnavel Hospital. Maggie’s were granted planning permission this week to build a second Centre in Glasgow – which will make Glasgow the first city in the world to have two Maggie’s Centres. Life Walkers were treated to a view of the model of the new Centre, which is designed by leading architect, Rem Koolhaas.
Another exciting aspect of the walk was that all participants were entered into their own mini draw with Scotland’s own charity lottery - People’s Postcode Lottery (PPL). PPL held the draw at the start of the Autumnal life walk to emulate their successful weekly draws. One lucky participant won £500 whilst two runners up won prizes of £200 and £100, as announced by Mr People’s Postcode Lottery, Angus Purden. Life walkers were also put through their paces at a warm up session with British Military Fitness Instructors prior to setting off en route.
Maggie’s Life Walk Event Manager, George Bushell, said: “Maggie’s Glasgow Life Walk is about life, about getting fit and celebrating the city’s remarkable parks, buildings and green spaces. And most importantly it is about supporting others by raising funds for Maggie’s Centres to help people to build a life with, through and beyond a cancer diagnosis. It was an extremely exciting year for Glasgow Life Walkers, as we had the opportunity to offer participants the chance to see the site of the new Centre and the striking design. I’d also like to thank the People’s Postcode Lottery for their ongoing support including support of this event adding an extra bit of fun to the day, as participants gathered at the start to hear if they were a lucky winner of a cash prize.”
