The Wicker Man Oxford Project - 2011/2012
This year's Wickerman Oxford Project has recently launched, and it will be bigger and better than ever! For 2011 and 2012, the Wickerman Oxford Project are supporting Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.
The “Wicker Man Oxford Project” is run by a dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers. There are only three core team members who co-ordinate the entire years events in their spare time, but Wickerman Oxford can draw on a small group of wonderful supporters. Their mission is to raise awareness of Maggie's Oxford and funds for it through development and touring with the novel giant sculptures, and engage the community in the process.
Wickerman Oxford runs a competition each year for local children to design the giant metal and wicker sculpture. The team then build the winning design as an approximately 40 feet tall Wooden / Wicker Sculpture on a metal frame. The finished sculpture is then taken on tour to prestigious events (in previous years this has included the Cornbury Music Festival, the Royal Berkshire Show and Blenheim Horse Trials) where it is used to raise funds and awareness for our chosen charity. During its tour the sculpture is seen by well in excess of a million people, and receives local and National press coverage.
For the last three years the Wickerman Oxford team, in association with many local community groups, have invested a vast amount of effort, time and personal resources to develop novel and exciting wicker man of Oxford sculptures for charity. Do you have any unwanted CDs or DVDs? We’ve teamed up with Music Magpie, a company that sends free recycle boxes to anyone wanting to participate, and exchange unwanted CDs and DVDs for cash for Maggie’s Oxford. If you have any old unwanted CDs or DVDs simply drop them in to Maggie’s Oxford and we’ll add them to our collection box. Once the box has been filled, we’ll arrange for Music Magpie to pick up the box and exchange this for cash for Maggie’s Oxford! It’s that simple. Become an Active Friend of Maggie's Oxford
Active Friends are volunteers who form a group that represent Maggie’s in their home area and help to raise money in local communities.
Groups of Active Friends can have between 5 to 20 members, depending on the size of the area covered. To get involved you don’t need experience – you just need good organisational skills, to enjoy bringing people together and a passion to improve cancer support in Oxfordshire.
You will work closely with the Maggie’s staff to identify and approach people in your area who may enjoy being part of the Active Friends Group. Maggie’s will support you in all your efforts.
Active Friends set a fundraising target each year. There is a huge variety of activities you can be involved with, so it’s up to each group to decide what would be most fitting and to delegate responsibilities within the group. Activities can include:
• Holding one or more annual Active Friends local events; perhaps a coffee morning, a book sale, a fashion show, a ball – the possibilities are endless.
• Ensuring all shops in your area are offered a collection tin for Maggie’s and banking the money on a regular basis.
• Attending cheque presentations and functions on behalf of Maggie’s.
• Selling raffle tickets.
• Putting up Maggie’s posters in local areas and distributing information to Doctors surgeries, libraries, etc.

An Evening with Paul Mayhew-Archer

50 Maggie’s supporters enjoyed a three course dinner and a highly entertaining evening with Paul who is best known for co-writing “The Vicar of Dibley”. Thanks to everyone who supported this event.
Halloween fundraising

Barbara, Christine, Julia and Sue got into the Halloween spirit to raise money for Maggie’s Oxford at Sainsbury's. Together they raised a fantastic £888. Well done all!
North Banbury Scout Group
October 2011
About 60 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the North Banbury Scout Group teamed up to take on an assault course for Maggie's. Taking part in 10 activites, inclduing climbing and beam balancing, the children raised an incredible £1,000 for Maggie's Oxford.
Group Scout leader Philip Tree said: "A friend of one of the Beaver leaders lost her boyfriend to cancer so it was suggested we raise some money to support the charity."

French Hog Roast and Auction

Huge thanks to all involved in a recent Hog Roast and auction in Civray, France, which raised just over €2,000 for Maggie's Oxford and Le Ligue Contre le Cancer.
This was a fantastic achievement and particular thanks to all those who donated auction items, the pig and all the other food gifts not to mention the lovely venue. Well done to the Caine familly and everyone who helped out for thier hardwork.Achilles Outward Bound Event

A huge thank you to everyone at Achilles, who took part in an Outward Bound event over a weekend in June for Maggie's Oxford.
"All Achilles participating teams aim to raise as much money as possible before the challenge, team building with their group and supporting a good cause. Each year we choose a local charity of choice –this year it was Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Oxford – to donate half of the money raised. Maggie’s was the perfect choice for us this year as it is a charity close to our participants hearts. This year teams organised a cake sale, raffle and quiz which involved each participant timing their fastest one mile run and the office matching the runners to their mile times.
The Challenge took place on 17th-19th June, where all teams travelled to the Lake District to compete. The winning team will be announced at the Prize-Giving reception with HRH The Duke of York later this year."LDC Arch to Arc cycle ride

Huge thanks to all involved in LDC's Arch to Arc 24-hour cycle challenge, which has raised over £10,200 for Maggie’s Oxford. LDC have an office in Reading and the cheque was presented by Darryl Eales, Chief Executive of LDC, at their HQ in London.
The team included Sheryl Haddow, Dafydd Pugh, Iain Ainstess, Martin Bean, Kevin Marriot, Edward Hayter, Rob Pendleton, Mark Mcghee, Mark Beaumont, Pete Latham, John Handley, Sophie Reed, Michael Kennedy, Stuart Forbes and Iain Stanton.

A team from Oxford Castle Ltd walk 44km to raise money for Maggie’s Oxford. They walked from Henley to Oxford Castle Malmaison Hotel where they were greated with a well deserved breakfast.

The South Bucks Jewish Community celebrated its 21st birthday by holding a charity fundraising party to raise funds for Maggie’s Oxford and the South Bucks Jewish Community Youth Education Project.
A fantastic £1,568 was raised and a cheque was presented to Sandy Briscoe and Claire Marriott, Centre Head, by Harriet Karsh and Rabbi Rachel Benjamin.
